Since establishing our firm in 1990, we have worked with world-renowned interior designers, architects and private clients to develop custom, handmade carpets for residences, retail stores, universities, offices and hotels.
An ardent enthusiast of history and its connection to design, Groundplans founder Jody became a differentiator for the hospitality industry – inviting design collaborations that integrate biophilic and sight specific motifs indigenous to their domestic or international location. She has seen the industry’s thinking change from one of skepticism to it now becoming a given.
We stand out from the crowd as a small, female-owned custom carpet business. We partner directly with mills around the world and have unique industry backgrounds in fine arts and engineering, allowing us to help you design a rug that fits perfectly in your space while guiding you through each step of the process.
Reach out to us with your initial questions or ideas, and we can arrange a video or phone call for a personal rug consultation.
Our firm originated after 15 years of training in fine arts, weaving, and other methods of textile design and production.
Unlike most flooring companies, we are rooted in the art of design. After studying under a National Living Treasure in Japan for years, founder Jody Harrow gained her start first in textile design and her works, Peka Prints, are featured in the Cooper Hewitt Museum’s private collection. We consider the interior space of our clients when translating their designs into flooring and can guide them through the limitless customizations. Because an area rug is one of the few places where a designer can have a direct impact upon their product, this can be exciting but at the same time overwhelming, moving into uncharted territory. With our 30+ years assisting designers in this niche, there is no challenge that can’t be met.
We enjoy exploring the junction of innovative materials and the ancient craft of flooring.
We freely experiment with designs, construction techniques and materials, with an appreciation that weaving is one of the oldest craft tradition known to human-kind. Our collections range from incorporating fiber optic LEDs and Swarovski crystals, to a centuries-old crafts tradition of producing hand- woven rugs, pillows and throws made from the wool of a rare breed of long-haired sheep, felted in a local river in Europe. Our jobs give us the freedom to circle back to our initial motivation for producing rugs – design and our passion for cultural heritage.
Expertise in project management and operations. Growing up alongside the rug business, Eileen Le Guillou, Jody’s daughter and business partner, learned to speak the language of client specifications and sourcing details. She worked for IBM as a program manager for 5 years leading large-scale technology implementation teams before joining Groundplans full time in 2018.
